Ernie Bodai (Dr.)

Director of Breast Surgical Services at Kaiser Permanente

Named as one of Fast Company's Fast 50 Trend Setters, Dr. Ernie Bodai is the mastermind and founder of the Breast Cancer Research Postage Stampthe first fundraising stamp in U.S. history. Now in its ninth year of issue, over 700 million stamps have been sold, raising nearly $75 million for breast cancer research.

Having treated over 4,000 women with breast cancer, Dr. Bodai became an activist when he noted the alarming rate of decline in breast cancer research funds. His idea, borne of anger, frustration and dismay, became his passion in 1995 when he came up with a simple idea: to raise funds by creating a special postage stamp that retails for a higher price than a regular stamp, the difference of which goes toward breast cancer research. Dr. Bodai criss-crossed America for more than two years, addressing key members of Congress, the U.S. Postal Service, and breast cancer advocates to make this inspired idea a reality.

Dr. Bodai is also a prostate cancer survivor. Since his diagnosis in 2000, he has become a passionate advocate for prostate cancer research and is currently working with the U.S. Postal Service to produce a similar stamp to benefit prostate cancer research. Dr. Bodai also spends his time testifying at the state and national levels for increased funding for prostate cancer research. Thus his mission is now twofold: to eradicate both prostate and breast cancer. Dr. Bodai is the author of several books, I Flunked My Mammogram! What You Need To Know About Breast Cancer NOW and also The Breast Cancer Book of Strength and Courage: Inspiring Stories to See You Through Your Journey. I Flunked My PSA! What You Need To Know About Prostate Cancer NOW. A documentary inspired by The Breast Cancer Book of Strength and Courage... aired nationally on PBS in the Fall of 2003 and featured the work of Dr. Bodai. Speaking as an activist, survivor, and doctor, he is one of the worlds most sought after speakers on breast cancer awareness and research.
