Frances Milliken

Arthur E. Imperatore Professorship in Entrepreneurial Studies Academic Director, Langone Program in Westchester Professor of Management

Frances J. Milliken is a Professor of Management and holds the Arthur E. Imperatore Professorship in Entrepreneurial Studies. She has taught courses to students at all levels in the Stern School from undergraduates to Ph.D. students.

Her primary research interest is in how the organizational context shapes the interactions between people in the organization as well as employee attitudes and behaviors. She and her colleagues have been interested, for example, in the dynamics of upward communication in organizations and the effects of hierarchy on employee voice as well as on organizational learning (Fang, et al., 2014; Morrison & Milliken, 2000; Milliken et al. 2003; Milliken & Lam, 2009). With her colleagues, she has also been exploring the effects of power on how people think and communicate (Magee et al., 2010; Milliken et al., 2014). Most recently, she and her colleagues have been looking at the effects of corporate social responsibility or sustainability initiatives on employees' attitudes and behaviors, both inside and outside the workplace (Milliken & See, 2014a; Milliken et al., 2014b).

She has also done research on teams, the management of diversity, and work-life issues (e.g., Forbes & Milliken, 1999; Milliken & Martins, 1996; Milliken et al., 1998). Her articles have appeared in the Academy of Management Journal, the Academy of Management Review, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, and the Strategic Management Journal as well as in other journals.

She received the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Academy of Management's Managerial and Organizational Cognition Division in 2013. She has also received the Best Paper Award from the MOC Division of the Academy of Management in 2009 and from the Eastern Academy of Management twice.

In addition to her research work, she has held several administrative roles at Stern including Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of the Undergraduate College, Director of the Doctoral Program in Management, University Senator, Co-Chair of the Dean's Women's Advisory Committee, and Academic Director of the Langone Program for Working Professionals in Westchester County, a position she still holds.

She is currently an Associate Editor of the Academy of Management's newest academic journal, Academy of Management Discoveries and has also served on the editorial boards of several other major management journals including the Academy of Management Review (2002-2007), the Academy of Management Journal (1996-2002), Organization Science (2009-present) and the Journal of Management Studies (2002-present).

Professor Milliken received her B.A. in Psychology from Barnard College and a M.B.A. and Ph.D. from the City University of New York.
