Smerlas was a three year starter at Boston College and captain as a senior, but was recognized individually for his outstanding play. While at B.C., Smerlas was two-time All Northeast.

Fred Smerlas was the 32nd player picked in the 1979 draft by the Buffalo Bills and was named All Rookie in his first season. While with the Bills, he started 156 games with the team, was a five-time All Pro, and was a seven-time All AFC. As part of the Bills, Smerlas was named Buffalo Player of the Decade and the team itself voted All Time Team.

Smerlas moved on to play for the San Francisco 49ers in 1990, and the following year he played his 200th game at Foxboro Stadium.

In addition to being heard on WEEI, Fred has appeared in commercials for Fox 25 (WFXT-Boston) and can be seen Sunday Mornings on Channel 7 (WHDH-Boston) co-hosting "The Fifth Quarter" with Gene Lavanchy.
