Fred Smerlas, a former New England Patriot and Buffalo Bill defensive lineman, is a frequent guest on The Big Show hosted by Glen Ordway on WEEI-AM in Boston. Fred can also be heard Sunday afternoons from 4-7 p.m. on the Real Post-Game show with Steve DeOssie, also on WEEI.

Smerlas was a three year starter at Boston College and captain as a senior, but was recognized individually for his outstanding play. He earned honorable mention All America by UPI and The Sporting News, was UPI All New England choice as both a junior and senior, and played in the Senior Bowl after his final campaign. While at B.C., Smerlas was two-time All Northeast.

Fred Smerlas was the 32nd player picked in the 1979 draft by the Buffalo Bills and was named All Rookie in his first season. While with the Bills, he started 156 games with the team, was a five-time All Pro, and was a seven-time All AFC. As part of the Bills, Smerlas was named Buffalo Player of the Decade and the team itself voted All Time Team.

Smerlas moved on to play for the San Francisco 49ers in 1990, and the following year he played his 200th game at Foxboro Stadium.
