Fredo Arias-King
founder of the academic quarterly Demokratizatsiya
Fredo Arias-King is the founder of the academic quarterly Demokratizatsiya: The Journal of Post-Soviet Democratization, publishing continuously since 1992 (visit www.demokratizatsiya.org). He holds an MA in Russian and East European studies (1998) and a Master in Business Administration (1997), both from Harvard University. At Harvard, was an associate of the Strengthening Democratic Institutions Project and of the Russian Investment Symposia (1994-98), in addition to having worked in many rule-of-law projects in the region over the years. Between March of 1999 and July of 2000, he was senior advisor on international affairs to the National Action Party of Mexico, handling (together with Dr. Carlos Salazar) the foreign relations of the Vicente Fox presidential campaign. He also has advised democratic forces in Moldova, Russia, Peru, Cuba, Belarus and Ukraine. In Moldova he received in 2004 the highest honor awarded by the democratic opposition, the “Inima de Aur” (Golden Heart), and helped establish the International Committee for Democracy in Cuba, which includes the main transition figures from Central Europe and Latin America. He writes on transitions to democracy and is the author of two books, the latest of which, Transiciones: La experiencia de Europa del Este, was published by CADAL in Buenos Aires in 2005.
Fredo Arias King es fundador (en 1992) de la revista académica Demokratizatsiya: The Journal of Post-Soviet Democratization, basada y publicada en Washington y Moscú. Es maestro de Administración de Empresas (MBA, 1997) y maestro en Estudios de Rusia y Europa Oriental (1998), ambos de la Universidad de Harvard en EEUU. En Harvard, fue asociado del Proyecto para Fortalecer Instituciones Democráticas (SDIP) y de sus conferencias magnas “Russia Investment Symposia” en 1994-98. En México, participó en las campañas presidenciales de Manuel Clouthier en 1988, y de Vicente Fox desde marzo de 1999. En esta última fungió como consejero de relaciones internacionales, llevando (junto con el Dr. Carlos Salazar) la agenda internacional de la campaña. Su más reciente libro, Transiciones: La experiencia de Europa del Este (Buenos Aires: CADAL, 2005) distingue a las transiciones exitosas de las demás. También es consejero de grupos democráticos en Belarús, Ucrania, Rusia, Cuba, Perú y Moldova. En este último país, fue otorgado en el 2004 el más alto reconocimiento por parte de las fuerzas democráticas, el “Inima de Aur” (Corazón de Oro). Sobre el tema de Cuba, es miembro del comité consejero del Centro de Estudios para una Opción Nacional (Miami) y forma parte del Comité Internacional para la Democracia en Cuba (encabezado por Václav Havel), que reúne a líderes de transición de América Latina y Europa post comunista.
