Gail Dines
Scholar, activist, and social critic who takes an unflinching look at hypersexualization and pornography.
Dr. Gail Dines is a professor of sociology and women’s studies at Wheelock College in Boston, an internationally acclaimed speaker and author, and a feminist activist. Her writing and lectures focus on the hypersexualization of the culture and the ways that porn images filter down into mainstream pop culture.
Gail’s work on media and pornography has appeared in academic journals, magazines such as Time and Newsweek, and newspapers across the country. She is a frequent guest on radio and television and is a recipient of the Myers Center Award for the Study of Human Rights.
Gail is a founding member of Stop Porn Culture – an educational and activist group made up of academics, anti-violence experts, community organizers and anyone who is concerned about the increasing pornification of the culture.
Exciting News! Iceland is drafting legislation to limit access to violent porn. Stop Porn Culture has organized a letter of support signed by a global contingent of thought leaders, elected officials, NGOs, public health experts, scholars, authors, public figures, and human rights organizations from 17 countries from 17 countries. Signers include Gloria Steinem, Robin Morgan, Rosanne Barr, the Swedish Women’s Lobby and the Feminist Party of Germany.
A progressive country, Iceland believes that porn violates women’s civil rights, undermines gender equality, and that Icelanders have a collective interest in protecting their children from the predatory porn industry – which they view as a form of cultural imperialism. For recent coverage, see the Guardian, Can Iceland lead the way towards a ban on violent online pornography? and this piece by Andres Jauregui in the Huffington Post. Gail Dines spoke on the BBC’s World Have Your Say in Feb. 2013 and on Icelandic TV in October 2012. She also authored this piece in Counterpunch: You know you have lived here too long when...
Gail Dines presented a talk in Dec. 2012 at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem: “How Porn Creates the John: Porn, Trafficking and the Social Construction of Masculinity.” She gave another presentation at a London conference in 2012: “From the Personal Is Political to the Personal is Personal: Neo-Liberalism and the Defanging of Feminism.”
