For nearly a quarter century, award-winning National Geographic author Gary McKechnie has explored his homeland by bus, car, rail, and motorcycle out of pure curiosity and an attempt to unravel the mystery of the bold and unusual experiment known as the United States of America. Recently Gary McKechnie completed a five-year tour of the country to create National Geographic's USA 101, a cultural and historic look at 101 of the nation's iconic events, festivals, and pastimes from the Academy Awards, Empire State Building, and Amish Country, to its battlefields, gospel sings, national parks, and whimsical events such as Groundhog Day and the All-American Soap Box Derby. McKechnie's latest volume is the follow-up to his award-winning book, Great American Motorcycle Tours, for which he traveled more than 30,000 miles across the country to create 25 back roads tours that highlight charming towns, historic sites, intriguing attractions, and wonderful restaurants. A former stand-up and improv comedian, McKechnie's easy humor and natural curiosity enhances intriguing and inspiring presentations that introduce guests to America and its unique citizenry: us.
