Majors Gene and Rebecca Hogg were appointed as area commanders for Central Maryland in June 2013. The Hoggs manage an operation to deliver an extensive range of compassionate services and spiritual programs to meet human needs in Baltimore City and the Baltimore, Carroll, Cecil, Harford, Howard, and Northern Anne Arundel counties.
The Commanders oversee three worship centers, a non-profit grocery store, an adult rehabilitation center, five social service centers, three Boys and Girls Clubs, and an anti-human trafficking home.
The Salvation Army of Central Maryland is privileged to have community stakeholders serving on an Advisory Board to lend their expertise to the overall management of the enterprise. The members of the Advisory Board serve on a variety of committees in the areas of program services, business services, resource development, and marketing. As committee members, they help make key decisions for the organization and participate in strategic planning to ensure The Salvation Army continues to successfully meet human needs as the Central Maryland population continues to grow.
Major Gene A. Hogg’s experience with The Salvation Army dates back long before his experience as an officer. He first encountered The Salvation Army in Memphis at the age of 8, after his family had been homeless for at least 3 years. The Salvation Army helped his parents find jobs, an apartment, and invited the children to participate in character-building programs and camp. When he was called to ministry, Major Hogg knew that it would be as a Salvation Army officer, not only because of his personal experience with The Army, but because of how close The Salvation Army is to the street.
Major Gene A. Hogg also brings an extensive experience in disaster work. Internationally, he participated in the Army’s response to the 1985 Mexico City earthquake as well as the Monterrey, Mexico flooding. Nationally, he served as onsite Incident Commander at the Pentagon for 9/11, as Unified Incident Commander for Hurricane Katrina, and as the Federal Government’s Liaison for the Oklahoma City bombing. He also served as part of General Colin Powell’s “America’s Promise Alliance.”
Major Gene A. Hogg received his Bachelors of Arts in Leadership and Ethics from Nazarene College. Gene met his wife, Rebecca, while attending The Salvation Army’s officers’ college. The two were married after being commissioned, and have one daughter, Kimberly.
In their 20 plus years as officers of The Salvation Army in the Southern Territory, the Hoggs have served in seven of the nine territorial divisions as Corps Officers, Area Commanders, Divisional Youth Secretaries, Divisional Secretaries, and General Secretaries.
