George Howell      

News Anchor & Correspondent for CNN

George Howell is an anchor for CNN International. Based at the network's headquarters in Atlanta, he anchors 'CNN Newsroom' Friday through Sunday, reaching viewers of both CNNI and CNN/US.

Howell previously served as a national correspondent for CNN in the network's Chicago bureau. In this role he covered a number of major U.S. stories including the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, where he was first on the ground for CNN covering the unrest that followed Brown's death, as well as the trial of George Zimmerman for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

He also covered various Midwest and West Coast stories including the devastating tornado outbreaks in Oklahoma City in summer 2013, the Midwest energy crisis in winter 2013 and the deadly Washington state mudslide in 2014.

Before coming to CNN, Howell worked as a reporter at ABC affiliate WSB in Atlanta. He also worked at KREM in Spokane, Washington; KXAN in Austin, Texas; and stations KOMO and KIRO in Seattle, Washington, where he also covered the eruption of Mount St. Helens.

In 2009 he founded breakingintobroadcasting.com, a website to offer support and advice to beginning journalists.

Howell has been honored by the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists, the New York Association of Black Journalists and has earned several Emmy nominations throughout his career.

Howell graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Journalism degree. As a student, he was honored by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation as a finalist in a national competition for excellence in journalism.

He resides in Atlanta with his family.
