George Mitchell

Former U.S. Senator, Senate Majority Leader, Peace Negotiator

George J. Mitchell is a lawyer, businessman, author, and former politician who served as a United States Senator from Maine, Senate Majority Leader, and United States District Judge.

Mitchell's political career began with his appointment to the U.S. Senate in 1980 to complete the term of Sen. Edmund S. Muskie, who resigned to become Secretary of State. After securing election for a full term in 1982, Mitchell served in the Senate until 1995, concluding his tenure as Senate Majority Leader, a position he held from January 1989. His legislative achievements included leading the 1990 reauthorization of the Clean Air Act, authoring the nation’s first oil spill prevention and cleanup law, and playing a key role in the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Beyond his legislative work, Mitchell was deeply involved in peace negotiations. From 1995 to 2000, he was the Independent Chairman of the Northern Ireland Peace Talks, which culminated in the Good Friday Agreement, an historic accord that ended decades of conflict in the region. His efforts earned him multiple accolades, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Truman Institute Peace Prize, and the United Nations (UNESCO) Peace Prize. Additionally, Mitchell chaired an International Fact-Finding Committee on violence in the Middle East, producing the influential "The Mitchell Report" in 2001, under the endorsements of multiple governments and organizations.

In addition to his diplomatic and legal accomplishments, Mitchell has written several insightful books on global issues and his experiences in diplomacy, including "Men of Zeal," co-authored with Sen. William S. Cohen, and "Making Peace," which details his involvement in the Northern Irish peace process. His most recent works include "The Negotiator," a memoir published in 2015, and "A Path to Peace," co-authored with Alon Sachar in 2016, exploring solutions for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Mitchell's enduring influence and experience in U.S. foreign policy, especially concerning the Middle East and Northern Ireland, make him a respected figure in discussions on international relations and diplomacy. At 90, he remains optimistic about America's role on the global stage and continues to provide valuable insights into the intricacies of political negotiations and conflict resolution.
