George Shea

George Shea created the sport of competitive eating and can provide a humorous account of the history of the effort that reveals many important lessons on marketing, brand-building, media relations, and which is also very funny.

During the past 20-plus years I have developed the sport of competitive eating as a platform for brand promotion with my brother, Richard. Our organization, Major League Eating, now runs 80 events a year in the US and abroad. The recent Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest, which I host, attracted more than 40,000 fans and generated one billion media impressions for Nathan's on media such as the Today Show, Colbert, CNN, NY Times, etc. The ESPN live broadcast of the event, hosted by Richard, got a huge rating.

I host between 20 and 30 live events a year for audiences ranging from several hundred to tens of thousands, and I do hundreds of media interviews and have appeared on innumerable live television programs including the Today Show, ESPN, GMA, Fox News, CNN, Bloomberg, etc. My brother and I have produced and served as on-air talent in dozens of television programs, both live and taped, on networks including ESPN, SpikeTV, Fox, InHD, Travel Channel, etc.

I thought that I might be able to provide a very interesting, funny and instructive talk on the development of the sport, including anecdotes, lessons learned and the secrets of pursuing a creative idea to success. The growth of the sport is a fascinating subject to those involved in marketing, PR, brand-building, and is especially compelling to a younger male audience, including college males and young professionals, many of whom are familiar with, or follow the exploits of, competitive eating.

Following are several links that provide a snapshot of who I am, my presence and the visibility level of the sport. I suspect that I would be on the lowest end in terms of fees, but at $5,000 gross I believe clients would be extraordinarily happy with the address I would present.

I have been asked to present a keynote address in early September and I will tape this and send it along to provide a view of my exact speaking style.
