Gideon Yago

Television News Correspondent

For 7 years, Gideon Yago was the face of news and current events to millions of young adults in America. As a correspondent and producer for MTV News, Yago helmed the network’s coverage of elections, wars, national crises, and social trends affecting young people. He has received numerous awards, including an Emmy for his coverage of the 2004 election, a George Foster Peabody Award for his work in MTV’s “Fight For Your Rights: Sexual Health” campaign and an Edward R. Murrow Award for outstanding documentary coverage of the Iraq war in 2004.

Yago is currently hosting The IFC Media Project, a documentary series that examines how the news gets made and how it impacts our daily lives. Already in its second season, The IFC Media Project features interviews with newsmakers, discusses what’s wrong with the news today, and delves into important stories that were inaccurately reported by leading news outlets.

Yago began in television as a cub reporter during the 2000 presidential election covering John McCain and George W. Bush’s campaigns. After 2000, he spent a year as a writer for the MTV News desk until the events of 9/11 mandated a radical shift in MTV’s programming with an emphasis on news and documentaries. Yago has produced and hosted specials on the war in Afghanistan, the Iraq War (Yago is the only correspondent in the network’s history to cover an active conflict in 2003’s Diary of Gideon in Baghdad and True Life: I Live in Iraq), natural disasters like the 2004 Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, drug addiction, bias crime, sexual health, extreme poverty, AIDS in Africa and young veterans in America.

He has interviewed some of the world’s foremost leaders face to face, including President George W. Bush, Former President Bill Clinton, Ambassador L. Paul Bremer, Senator John McCain, Senator John Kerry, Al Gore, Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice and Bill Gates. For 18 months, he was the producer and head writer of the news magazine “The Wrap” on MTV2. His reporting has also appeared in Rolling Stone, Spin and Vice Magazines, and on NPR’s “This American Life.”

For the 2008 Presidential elections, Yago was the host of MTV and MySpace.com’s “Presidential Dialogues,” conducting interviews and hosting town halls on-air and on-line with all of the former candidates, including Senators Barack Obama, John McCain, Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Governor Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul.

To a generation savvy about media biases and packaging, Yago frames complex issues in an unbiased, informative format. His presentation is a hip look at what happened during the presidential race and other newsworthy events around the world.

In addition to his current projects, Yago has two film scripts in production for Focus Features and Paramount Vantage. He was born in Madison, Wis., and raised in Queens, NY. He currently lives in New York City.
