Greg Garrett
Author & Professor of Creative Writing, Film, Literature, & Theology at Baylor University
Dr. Greg Garrett is a professional writer who teaches creative writing, film, literature, and theology classes at Baylor University. He is the author of over twenty books of fiction, nonfiction, memoir, and translation, including the critically-acclaimed novels Free Bird, Cycling, Shame, and The Prodigal.
Dr. Garrett is best-known as one of America’s leading voices on religion and culture (BBC Radio), and he has written nonfiction books including The Gospel According to Hollywood, Stories from the Edge: A Theology of Grief, and One Fine Potion: The Literary Magic of Harry Potter (named a 2011 Best Theological Book by the Association of Theological Booksellers). His most recent nonfiction books are Living with the Living Dead: The Wisdom of the Zombie Apocalypse (Oxford University Press, 2017), Crossing Myself: A Story of Spiritual Rebirth (Morehouse, 2016), and Entertaining Judgment: The Afterlife in Literature and Culture (Oxford University Press, 2015). His books have been translated into Spanish, Portuguese, German, Dutch, and Czech editions. He has also written hundreds of articles and essays for publications including Salon, Washington Post, Huffington Post, The Tablet, Patheos, Christianity Today, OnFaith, The Daily Mirror, and many other print and web publications.
Dr. Garrett often represents Baylor as a speaker, teacher, and workshop leader, with appearances at Villanova University, Google UK, Washington National Cathedral, the Episcopal Diocese of Delaware, the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado, the American Library in Paris, Cambridge University, Blackwells Bookstore in Oxford, the Edinburgh Festival of Books, and Gladstone's Library in Wales. He regularly teaches classes for the Writers League of Texas, and moderates events year-round for the Austin Film Festival. A seminary-trained lay preacher in the Episcopal Church, Dr. Garrett is a distinguished homiletician who has preached at Wesley Seminary, St. Mark's Cathedral in Seattle, King's College in London, and the American Cathedral in Paris, on the nationally-broadcast radio show Day One, and as the featured preacher for the annual meeting of the International Academy of Homiletics.
A winner of the Pirate's Alley William Faulkner Prize for Fiction and a CASE Grand Gold Medal for essay, Dr. Garrett is Theologian in Residence at the American Cathedral in Paris and a Fellow of the Cathedral College at Washington National Cathedral. He was named the Outstanding Baylor Faculty Member for 1994 by the Baylor Student Congress, received the university administration's outstanding professor award in 1996, and was awarded the Baylor Centennial Professor designation for 2013-14. Dr. Garrett was elected to the Texas Institute of Letters in 2005. He has discussed his writing with or been covered by National Public Radio, BBC Radio, The Bob Edwards Show, CBS Radio, FOX News, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Interfaith Voices, DublinTalk Radio, msnbc.com, Vice, New Statesman, National Review, The Spectator, New York Times, L.A. Times, Globe and Mail, Men’s Health, and many other print, broadcast, and web media outlets in the US and across the globe.
