Born in Appleton, Wisconsin, Van Susteren initially pursued a career in law, earning her JD from Georgetown University Law Center. She began as a trial attorney and adjunct law professor before transitioning to a successful television career, which would become her defining professional path.

Van Susteren first gained national recognition during the 1990s as a legal analyst for CNN, providing insightful coverage of high-profile cases, including the O.J. Simpson trial. Her expertise and on-air presence led to her co-hosting CNN’s "Burden of Proof" and "The Point." In 2002, she joined Fox News, where she hosted the popular program "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren" for 14 years. Known for her straightforward, fact-based approach and refusal to align with partisan rhetoric, Van Susteren became a trusted figure across a diverse viewership. She was honored with the Excellence in Media Award by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund in 2015 and received the American Bar Association Presidential Award for Excellence in Journalism in 2001. She has been named one of Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful Women in the World six times.

Also in 2016, Van Susteren moved to MSNBC with "For the Record with Greta," though her tenure there was brief. She later joined Gray Television as the host of "Full Court Press with Greta Van Susteren," where she explored key political and social issues through in-depth interviews and analysis, before moving to Newsmax Media where she began hosting "The Record with Greta Van Susteren" and continues to work as a journalist.

Van Susteren is an outspoken advocate for press freedom and has supported various humanitarian causes, including disaster relief efforts in Haiti and refugee rights.
