Harry Weller

General Partner, New Enterprise Associates

Eight-time Midas Lister Harry Weller slid a bit in the rankings this year, but the joint-head of NEA's software and services practice is still powering along with the recent acquisition of portfolio company Pentaho, a big data play, by Hitachi Data Systems for $520 million. He was one of the earliest investors in Groupon (IPO 2011) and sits on the board of Opower (IPO 2014), though that stock has not fared well. Other portfolio potentials include Duolingo (a language learning service) and MongoDB (open-source database). Weller DJed in college and flew planes for the U.S. Navy before joining NEA in 1996. He currently sits on the boards of Appian, DataRobot, Elastic, OnShape, ScienceLogic, SolidFire, Suniva, and TrackMavin. Weller is also chairman and cofounder of the Experiment Fund at Harvard University. This past year, Weller tried to go back to his college roots by taking computational physics courses online, a move that reminded him why he's an investor not a physicist.
