An award-winning activist and writer, Heather Corinna is the executive director of Scarleteen.com, the inclusive online resource for teen and young adult sex education and information which she founded in 1998. She is the author of "S.E.X.: The All-You-Need-to-Know Progressive Sexuality Guide to Get You Through High School and College"; a co-founder of the All Girl Army; and director of the CONNECT teen sexual health outreach program for King County. She is on the editorial board of the American Journal of Sexuality Education, a writer and contributing editor for the 2011 edition of "Our Bodies, Ourselves," a member of the Board of Directors for NARAL Pro-Choice Washington, and her young adult sexuality advice is syndicated weekly at the United Nations Foundation-supported reproductive health hub RH Reality Check. She has also been trained as a facilitator for Teen Talking Circles.
Heather was the winner of The Champions of Sexual Literacy Award for Grassroots Activism from the National Sexuality Resource Center/SFSU in 2007; in 2009 the winner of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality, Western Region’s Public Service Award and the Our Bodies, Ourselves’ Women’s Health Heroes Award. In 2011, Scarleteen won a Seattle Web Award for Best Nonprofit Website. Heather was a lead plaintiff in the ACLU vs. Gonzales case, arguing against the Child Online Protection Act (COPA), which could have removed young adults’ access to needed sexual health and sexuality information. Her work with Scarleteen helped win the case.
Previous to her work in sexuality and sexual health, Heather was a Montessori and alternative classroom educator for several years. She was a graduate with honors from The Chicago Academy for the Arts, attended Shimer College and received her Montessori training at the Midwest Montessori Teacher Training Center. A Chicago native, she now lives and works in the pacific northwest.
