Heidi Schreck

Actress & Playwright, Two-Time Tony Award Nominee

Actress and playwright Heidi Schreck’s hit play, What The Constitution Means to Me, which she wrote and stars in, was inspired by her experiences touring the country as a 15-year-old, giving speeches about the importance of the U.S. constitution in American Legion halls to get scholarship money. Schreck plays both her current and teenage self, reflecting on her family’s history and American history focusing on how the Constitution does not protect women and minorities.

The play, which transferred to Broadway’s Helen Hayes Theater this year, has been 30 years in the making but gained a new relevance after the 2016 election. The play won an Obie Award for Best New American Play, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best American Play, and an Off Broadway Alliance Award for Best New Play, and was nominated for the 2019 Tony Award for Best Play and 2019 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play.
