Ilan Wurman is a young and dynamic author, speaker, and professor of constitutional law. His two most recent books are "The Second Founding: An Introduction to the Fourteenth Amendment" (Cambridge 2020), and "A Debt Against the Living: An Introduction to Originalism" (Cambridge 2017). He speaks on these books and related topics, covering the nation's first struggle for civil rights and racial equality culminating in the adoption of the Fourteenth Amendment, which he calls "The Second Founding," as well as on the "first founding" and its relevance for today.
Wurman's academic writing has appeared in the Yale Law Journal, the Stanford Law Review, the University of Chicago Law Review, the University of Pennsylvania Law Review, the Virginia Law Review, the Duke Law Journal, the Minnesota Law Review, and the Texas Law Review among other journals. His more popular writings have appeared in The Hill, National Affairs, Law & Liberty, and Newsweek, among other outlets. He currently teaches at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University, and his degrees are from Stanford Law School and Claremont McKenna College.
Wurman has delivered several Constitution Day lectures, including at the University of Virginia, College of the Holy Cross, Bellarmine, and Claremont McKenna College. His lecture on the story of the Fourteenth Amendment's adoption is suitable for those interested in topics of race, diversity, and inclusion from a more constitutional and historical perspective. His lecture on originalism and the Founding is suitable for groups on all sides of the political spectrum interested in learning more about constitutional interpretation and the direction of the modern Supreme Court.
