Israel Del Toro Jr.

First 100 Percent Combat-Disabled Active-Duty Air Force Technician; Paralympian

A retired Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force, Israel “DT” Del Toro’s story of survival began on a mountain near Qalat, Afghanistan, when his Humvee triggered a concealed landmine. Suffering third-degree burns over 80% of his body and losing fingers on both hands, DT fought for his life, driven by the promise to his three-year-old son that he would not leave him fatherless. With unwavering determination and the support of his family and comrades, DT defied the odds and emerged a true symbol of resilience. Today, as a recipient of the Pat Tillman Award at the 2017 ESPYs, DT inspires audiences across the country with his story of triumph and the power of the human spirit.
