Jaap Paauwe
professor of human resource studies
Before joining Tilburg in 2005 Paauwe worked as a full professor of organization at Erasmus University Rotterdam, heading the department of business and organisation of the School of Economics. At Erasmus University he is still involved in supervising PhD students. His main research interests are in the area of HRM, corporate strategy, organisational change and industrial relations. In addition to teaching in the regular MSc programmes, he is affiliated as fellow for the Tilburg Institute for Advanced Studies for which he developed the Advanced Human Resource Executive Program with a group of leading HR directors representing firms such as Unilever, Shell, AkzoNobel, Philips. He is also involved in a range of in-company executive training programmes. In 2005 he joined Cornell University (Ithaca, USA) as a visiting fellow and was involved in the teaching and research activities of CAHRS (Centre for Advanced Human Resource Studies). Together with Cambridge, INSEAD and Cornell University he is involved in a large-scale international research project on improving the excellence of the HR function within multinational companies. As well as this, the research group at Tilburg has initiated a similar international project, but focused on the topic of HR governance. Paauwe is also involved in more practice-oriented research, consultancy and coaching and acts as a moderator for a leading group of HR directors. He has written and co-authored books on human resource management and many articles. His latest book is on HRM and Performance: Achieving long-term viability (Oxford University Press, June 2004), for which he received the Dutch HRM network Award in 2005. His next – together with David Guest and Patrick Wright – will be published by the end of the year under the title: HRM and Performance: Achievements and Challenges. In 1991 he was academic visitor at the London School of Economics. In 1996 he was visiting professor at Templeton College, Oxford University (UK). Before joining the university he worked for the trade union movement (as head of CNV research department 1983-1988) and the Dutch-based multinational company, SHV, (1980-1983).
