Jack Ma

Chinese Business Magnate; Philanthropist; Advocate for the UN's Sustainable Development Goals

Jack Ma is a Chinese business magnate and philanthropist. He is best known as the founder and former executive chairman of Alibaba Group.

Ma founded Alibaba Group in 1999. He served as Alibaba’s executive chairman from 2013 to 2018, and previously as chairman and chief executive officer (CEO). Ma founded Alibaba based on the belief that the Internet could democratize the playing field for all types of businesses, especially small businesses. This tenet continues to underpin Alibaba's vision. Ma is also the founder of the Zhejiang-based charity Jack Ma Foundation.

After two decades building Alibaba into a $460 billion business, Ma officially announced his retirement from Alibaba in 2019 and is now pivoting full time to philanthropy. He started the Jack Ma Foundation in 2014 and has cited the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as an inspiration for his charitable endeavors.

In September 2016, Ma was named special adviser of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) for Youth Entrepreneurship and Small Business. He also served as chair of the 2016 B20 Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME) Development Taskforce, where he called for the establishment of an Electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP), an internet-based trading platform to help bring small businesses into the global economy and make it easier for them to expand trading capabilities worldwide.

Ma has served on the Board of SoftBank Group Corp., a Japanese corporation listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. He is also a member of the Foundation Board of the World Economic Forum, a member of the Board of the Breakthrough Energy Ventures, chairman of the Zhejiang Chamber of Commerce, and chairman of the China Entrepreneur Club.

In January 2016, Ma was named a Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) advocate by the United Nations.

In 2019, Forbes named Ma in its list of "Asia's 2019 Heroes of Philanthropy" for his work supporting underprivileged communities in China, Africa, Australia, and the Middle East.

Ma graduated from Hangzhou Teacher's Institute with a major in English language education.
