James Garcia  

James Garcia is a veteran journalist and has been a reporter, columnist, editor, and publisher.

As a reporter and columnist his articles have appeared in the Austin American-Statesman, San Jose Mercury News, Atlanta Journal and Constitution, The Dallas Morning News, Houston Chronicle, Hispanic Magazine, Texas Observer, Mexico City News, Todos.com, Latino.com and AmericanLatino.net. Mr. Garcia's columns were distributed nationally by the New America Writers Series as part of the New York Times Syndicate and the Cox News Service.

His broadcast commentary and analysis has aired on National Public Radio's Latino USA, ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, MSNBC, Talk Back Live on CNN, ABC's Political Points, The Laura Flanders Show and Pacifica Network News.

Additionally, Mr. Garcia was the first Latino editor-in-chief of a major alternative newsweekly in the nation, The San Antonio Current. And in 1992-1993, he served as a foreign correspondent for Cox Newspapers, covering Cuba, Mexico and Central America.

Most recently, Mr. Garcia served as the editor-in-chief of Latino Perspectives Magazine (latinoperspectivesmagazine.com). He remains a columnist for Latino Perspectives Magazine. He is now the Arizona Latino affairs correspondent for KJZZ in Phoenix.

Beginning in August, Mr. Garcia will serve as a lecturer at Arizona State University in the College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. He has taught ethnic studies, news writing and screenwriting.

Mr. Garcia also is a playwright. He holds an MFA in playwriting from Arizona State University and is the author of numerous plays, including Don Juan: Love After Death, Voices of Valor, Borderlines, Freedom Fighter, Ghost Dance Messiah, and The Crossing, which earned a Kennedy Center Award at the 2003 American College Theater Festival in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Garcia is married and lives with his wife and two daughters in Phoenix, Arizona.
