Dean, Maxwell School of Syracuse University; Former Deputy Secretary of State

James Steinberg is dean of the Maxwell School of Syracuse University and University Professor of Social Science, International Affairs, and Law. He previously served as deputy secretary of state for Secretary Clinton, dean of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, and vice president and foreign policy studies director at the Brookings Institution. Steinberg was President Clinton’s deputy national security advisor from 1996 to 2000. He held senior positions in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research and with Senator Edward Kennedy. He co-authored the upcoming book Strategic Reassurance and Resolve: US-China Relations in the 21st Century.
