James Suckling

American Wine Critic

James Suckling, a recognized American wine and cigar critic, has distinguished himself through extensive experience and a prominent career in the industry. A graduate in political science and journalism from Utah State University and the University of Wisconsin, Suckling joined Wine Spectator in 1981, contributing significantly to its growth in subscribers. His expertise took him to Paris where he established Wine Spectator's European bureau and honed his craft, reviewing European wines. In addition to his editorial roles, Suckling co-founded Divino Tuscany, a celebrated food and wine tasting event in Tuscany, and launched a charity wine project, One Wine One World, aimed at fostering unity among different faiths.

Known for his unique approach to wine tasting, Suckling places emphasis on the taste in the mouth and the persistence of the taste in the aftertaste. He has a noted preference for Bordeaux wine and shows an affinity for Italian grape varieties such as Sangiovese, Aglianico, and Nebbiolo. His well-rounded palate and unique approach have seen him sample an average of 4000 wines annually, primarily focusing on Italian wines. His commitment to his craft and his contributions to the French wine and vineyards segment saw him knighted by France in June 2021, receiving the Ordre National du Merite.

Following his retirement from Wine Spectator and Cigar Aficionado in 2010, Suckling has remained active in the wine industry, often participating in wine-related events and seminars. His website, JamesSuckling.com, features a variety of video content with key figures in the wine industry from around the world. Additionally, Suckling has appeared in several films related to wine, including "Cigars: The Heart and Soul of Cuba" and "Blood Into Wine". The latter part of his career highlights his belief that wine should be considered emotionally rather than scientifically, and that it should have the capacity to "move you" in some way.
