Janine Latus

Author & Activist

Janine Latus is the author of the international bestseller If I Am Missing or Dead: A sister's story of love, murder and liberation, which tells the story of two sisters who grow up to choose angry and controlling men. One breaks free and thrives, the other is strangled by her live-in boyfriend. Janine is the sister who survived, and she had to help find and identify her sister's body. That led to a lifelong campaign to save other families from what hers endured.

Janine is a dynamic and engaging speaker on the spectrum of sexual assault and intimate partner violence who uses her own family’s heart-breaking story to illustrate the red flags of abuse so that audience members can recognize those warning signs in their own lives and in those of the people around them and create plans to both intervene or ask for help, and then break free or help others to do so. Her talks are part story, part strategy, based on the Duluth Power & Control Wheel and full of practical action items, but because they are built on a story, they resonate long after everyone has left the session room.

Janine has told her story to hundreds of audiences, from the United States military to universities, high schools and colleges, and has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for shelters and social service agencies. She has helped corporations, including Kimberly Clark, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the Inter-American Development Bank, create safer environments by teaching everyone from the people at the front door to the ones in the corner offices how to recognize the symptoms of abuse and intervene effectively.

The Price of Misogyny

The imbalance of power in workplaces and homes is costing your business. It is costing the U.S. economy, and it is costing individual households. When women and minorities are interrupted or shushed, your company not only misses out on their great ideas but those valuable employees leave, leading to costly turnover and re-training. When women suffer sexual harassment in the workplace they are distracted, their energy redirected to keeping themselves safe and respected, and your company loses their efforts. When employees are afraid at home they cannot bring their all to their jobs. If there's violence there is the very real risk of it spilling over into the workplace, endangering fellow employees. Indeed, just letting men manage a company's investments may cost profits - women-run funds earn significantly higher returns on investment over time. Let Janine help you understand the costs of imbalance, and what you can do to right the ship.
