Jared Polis

43rd Governor of Colorado & Entrepreneur

Jared Polis currently holds the position of the 43rd Governor of Colorado, a role he has carried out since 2019. His career in public service is extensive, reaching back to a term served on the Colorado State Board of Education from 2001 to 2007. Prior to his governorship, Polis was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Colorado's 2nd district, serving from 2009 to 2019. Notably, Polis's election as governor marked a significant milestone as he became the first openly gay man and the second openly LGBT person to be elected governor of a U.S. state.

In addition to his political pursuits, Polis is also a successful entrepreneur. His ventures range from co-founding an internet access provider, American Information Systems (AIS), Inc., to establishing ProFlowers, an online florist that later went public on NASDAQ. He also founded TechStars, a startup accelerator, in 2006. One of his most notable business accomplishments was the sale of his electronic greeting card website, bluemountain.com, which was sold for a substantial sum. Beyond his business endeavors, Polis has displayed a firm commitment to education and the community through the founding of the Jared Polis Foundation, which issues annual Teacher Recognition Awards and donates computers to schools and nonprofit organizations.

Polis's political and business successes are complemented by his commitment to social issues, particularly surrounding LGBT rights and the legalization of cannabis. His advocacy in these areas is evident in his role in launching the Congressional Cannabis Caucus in 2017, his decision to pardon 1,351 Coloradans convicted of marijuana possession in 2021, and his continuous efforts to ensure non-discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
