Jason Rezaian

Iranian-American Journalist; Former Tehran Bureau Chief for The Washington Post

Jason Rezaian serves as a Global Opinions columnist for The Washington Post. He has devoted his life to advocating for freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and rights for journalist abroad and at home. Previously, he worked in the capacity of the Tehran correspondent for The Post from 2012-2016. It was while holding this position that Rezaian was unjustly detained for 544 days in an Iranian prison. This experience served as the inspiration for his later bestselling novel, "Prisoner," which recounts the nearly two-year battle of his fight to be released.

In conjunction with his novel, Rezaian hosts a podcast, “544 Days,” detailing his hostage story, and what it took to finally get him out. In 2017, he graduated as a Nieman Fellow from Harvard University. In addition, he was a Terker Distinguished Fellow between 2016-2018 at George Washington University.

Rezaian was awarded the Thomas Jefferson Medal in Citizen Leadership in 2023, and serves as the Executive Director of Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Commission on Hostages and Wrongful Detention. He graduated with a BA in Cultural Studies from The New School.
