CEO at Illumina

Jay Flatley has served as CEO and as a director of Illumina since October 1999. He drives the strategic vision for the company and manages its commercial and corporate functions. Until December 2013, he served in the dual role of president and CEO leading the company through a period of tremendous growth. With the company’s initial success in genotyping and subsequent expansion into whole-genome sequencing, diagnostics and informatics, sales grew from $1.3 million in 2000 to more than $1.42 billion in 2013. Under Mr. Flatley’s leadership, the company launched over 50 major products, acquired several new technologies and entered multiple markets in the research, applied and clinical arenas. Illumina is now uniquely positioned to unlock the power of the genome, as the leading provider of genetic analysis technologies.

Prior to joining Illumina, Mr. Flatley was co-founder, president, CEO and a director of Molecular Dynamics, Inc., a NASDAQ-listed life sciences company focused on genetic discovery and analysis, from 1994 until its sale to Amersham Pharmacia Biotech Inc. in 1998. He served in various other positions of increasing responsibility with molecular dynamics from 1987 to 1994. From 1985 to 1987, Mr. Flatley was Vice President of Engineering and Vice President of Strategic Planning at Plexus Computers, a UNIX computer company. Mr. Flatley also serves as a director of Coherent, Inc., a NASDAQ-listed provider of photonics-based solutions to commercial and scientific research markets.

Mr. Flatley holds a B.A. in economics from Claremont McKenna College and a B.S. and M.S. in industrial engineering from Stanford University.
