Jay Leno

Emmy Award-Winning TV Late Night Show Host, Stand-Up Comedian & Best-Selling Author

Television host, writer, and comedian Jay Leno has been an active figure in the industry since 1976. His career has been marked by a series of successful stints on late-night television, most notably on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," which he hosted from 1992 to 2009 and then again from 2010 to 2014. During his tenure, Leno led the show to consistent ratings success, winning every consecutive quarter of his hosting over the past 19 years.

Aside from late-night television, Leno has also been involved in a variety of other ventures. In 2009, he launched an hour-long prime-time talk show, "The Jay Leno Show," featuring celebrity guests, musical performances, and popular segments like "Headlines." However, Leno returned to "The Tonight Show" in 2010 after the Winter Olympics and held the highest viewership in the second quarter of 2010 among late-night programs. After leaving "The Tonight Show" in 2014, Leno maintained a busy schedule, appearing on shows like "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon" and "Late Night with Seth Meyers," and performing around 200 live stand-up performances a year.

Leno's passion for cars has been a prominent aspect of his career as well. He began hosting "Jay Leno's Garage" in 2014, a show where he showcases his extensive collection of approximately 286 vehicles, including 169 cars and 117 motorcycles. He also writes a regular column in Popular Mechanics about his car collection and gives automotive advice. Leno, who is known to be dyslexic, shies away from vices, choosing not to smoke, drink alcohol, or gamble. Instead, much of his free time is occupied visiting car collections and working in his private garage. Leno's love for cars has also led to him setting several land speed records and driving the pace car in major NASCAR events.

Leno's commitment to philanthropy is another key aspect of his career. He has auctioned his Fiat 500 for charity and sponsors two scholarships at McPherson College. He has also donated $100,000 to the Feminist Majority Foundation and a scholarship fund at Salem State College. In addition to fundraising efforts, Leno has also performed for military troops associated with the war in Afghanistan and peacekeeping efforts in Bosnia.

From 2021 to 2023, Leno hosted the revival of the game show "You Bet Your Life." Leno has been honored with several accolades, including an Emmy for "Outstanding Comedy, Variety or Music Series," a People’s Choice Award, and an induction into the Television Academy's Broadcast Hall of Fame. He has also received honorary doctorate degrees from Emerson College and the Academy of Art University.

Leno was born in New Rochelle, New York, and raised in Andover, Massachusetts. He has been married to Mavis Leno since 1980 and they currently reside in Los Angeles.
