While at St. Thomas Aquinas High School (Ft. His performance of "Demerits, Detentions & Dismissals" has garnered praise from critics and teachers alike. Described by some as the "anti Professional Development" Professional Development and compared to a TEDTalk, "Demerits, Detentions & Dismissals" pays homage to the world's greatest profession. Rather than tell teachers what they should be doing, this show shines a light on the great things teachers are already doing each and every day in their classrooms, where they are not only teachers, but also support systems, guidance counselors, parents, life skills coaches, and willing listeners.

Demerits, Detentions & Dismissals: The Works of Taylor Mali

In a world where the teaching profession is oft maligned came a man, a short bald man, replete with the energy of a man twenty years his junior. His mission: to utilize theatre to extol the virtues of the world's greatest profession. His weapons: the art of improvisation, twenty years in the classroom, professional acting experience, and the Spoken Word poetry of four-time National Slam Poet champion, teaching advocate and former teacher Taylor Mali.

Described by some as the "anti Professional Development" Professional Development and compared to a TEDTalk, Demerits, Detentions & Dismissals: The Works of Taylor Mali featuring Jerry Seeger pays homage to the world's greatest profession. Rather than tell teachers what they should be doing, this show shines a light on the great things teachers are already doing each and every day in their classrooms, where they are not only teachers, but also support systems, guidance counselors, parents, life skills coaches, and willing listeners. Set in a theatrical format, this teacher's "lesson plan" features the poems of Mali as the lessons for the class/audience .

The show is for teachers, students and members of the community who will leave the performance with a greater understanding of what teachers actually do on any given day.
