Jesse Tyler Ferguson
Emmy & Tony Award-Winning Actor & LGBTQ Activist; Best-Known for “Modern Family”
For eleven seasons, Jesse Tyler Ferguson starred as “Mitchell Pritchett” on the ABC comedy "Modern Family." The show earned accolades, including five Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series, a Golden Globe Award for Outstanding Comedy Series, and four Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
In addition to his work on television, Ferguson has a strong presence in the theatre world. He made his Broadway debut at the age of 21 as “Chip” in George C. Wolfe’s revival of "On the Town." He later went on to originate the role of “Leaf Coneybear” in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," earning a Drama Desk Award for “Outstanding Ensemble Performance.” He returned to Broadway in 2016, starring in the one-man show "Fully Committed," a performance which garnered a Drama Desk Award for “Outstanding Solo Performance.” Ferguson's work on stage continued in 2022 when he won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his role in "Take Me Out."
Ferguson has also demonstrated his versatility by working extensively with The New York Public Theatre’s Shakespeare in the Park in notable productions such as "The Merchant of Venice," "The Tempest," "The Winter’s Tale," and "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Alongside these roles, he appeared in the world premieres of Jordan Harrison’s "Log Cabin," Christopher Shinn’s "Where Do We Live," and Michael John LaChiusa’s "Little Fish."
In 2020, Ferguson co-hosted HGTV's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" on the smaller screen with Ty Pennington. His film contributions include roles in "Ordinary Sinner," "Untraceable," and "Ice Age: Collision Course." In the realm of music, he made a notable appearance in Taylor Swift's music video for "You Need to Calm Down" in 2019.
A longstanding advocate for marriage equality, Ferguson co-founded the non-profit charity Tie The Knot in 2012 with his husband, Justin Mikita. Through this initiative, they design and sell limited-edition bow ties, with all the proceeds going to various organizations that fight for LGBTQ equality around the world. Furthermore, Ferguson has been active in political lobbying, including efforts to pass SB10, a bill that allowed same-sex marriage in Illinois. In recognition of his advocacy, he was named the celebrity ambassador for the LGBT community by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in October 2013 and participated in the ACLU's "Out for Freedom" campaign.
