NASA Astronaut, Marine Biologist & Physiologist; One of the First Women to Participate in An All-Female Spacewalk

Jessica Meir is a NASA astronaut, marine biologist, and physiologist. Along with NASA astronaut Christina Koch, she is known for having been one of the first women to participate in an all-female spacewalk, which the duo completed on October 18, 2019. She is currently working onboard the International Space Station on her first spaceflight as part of Expedition 61 and 62 as a flight engineer.

Before becoming an astronaut, Meir was an Assistant Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School, following postdoctoral research in comparative physiology at the University of British Columbia. Also a marine biologist, she has studied the diving physiology and behavior of emperor penguins in Antarctica, and the physiology of bar-headed geese, which are able to migrate over the Himalayas.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Brown University, a Master of Science in Space Studies from the International Space University, and a Doctorate in Marine Biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

In September 2002, Meir served as an aquanaut on the NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations 4 (NEEMO 4) crew. In 2013 she was selected by NASA to Astronaut Group 21.

Meir was included in Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2020.
