Jimmy Eat World

Alternative '90s Rock Band Known for "The Middle"

Jimmy Eat World, an American rock band formed in 1993 in Mesa, Arizona, was once a trailblazing name in the mid-'90s emocore scene. The band, composed of lead vocalist and lead guitarist Jim Adkins, rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist Tom Linton, bassist Rick Burch, and drummer Zach Lind, eventually found a larger audience by embracing a blend of alternative rock and power pop. The band's influence widened considerably with 1999's "Clarity," an album that has since emerged as a landmark of the emo genre. However, it was the band's follow-up (specifically the infectious single "The Middle") that crowned them as major figures in commercial rock.

The band has released ten studio albums, with the most recent one being "Surviving" in 2019. Their significant commercial breakthrough came with the release of several singles from their album "Bleed American" in 2001, four of which charted within the top 20 positions of the Alternative Songs chart, with "The Middle" reaching No. 1. The RIAA certified "Bleed American" platinum and "Futures" gold, rewarding the two albums for selling over 1.5 million records between them. The band also released a music video for the song "I Will Steal You Back" in 2013.

In 2016, Jimmy Eat World released their ninth album, "Integrity Blues," followed by their tenth studio album, "Surviving," in 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the band transitioned to an online concert series called "Phoenix Sessions." They returned to playing live shows in 2021, including an appearance at Lollapalooza the same year. In recent years, they have released new singles such as "Something Loud" and "Place Your Debts." In 2023, they took part in a North American co-headline tour with Manchester Orchestra and joined My Chemical Romance on their Australian tour.
