Johan Brand        

CEO of Kahoot! and Founding Director of behaviour design company We Are Human.

Johan co-founded and is the CEO of Kahoot!, an educational gaming platform with millions of users world wide.

He has over a decade's experience merging creativity, innovation and technology. His work has included high profile projects for brands including Mercedes, BBC, HP, and Unilever, as well as startups in London and abroad.

His professional career started in 2000 as a consultant on the revolutionary MagCom smartphone, backed by leading firms including Insight Capital Partners, Telenor Venture and Anders Wilhelmsen. He later went on to study Fine Art Photography in Edinburgh and Entrepreneurship in Boston, working in the City's high tech startup environment.

In 2008 Johan was part of the founding management team of award-winning creative company, Playgroup. In 2010 he left his position as Strategic Creative Director to set up what has become We Are Human, a lean co-creative company, with global impact. In addition to working with some of the world's most recognised brands, We Are Human also incubates and develops its own IP, including the innovative EdTech platform Kahoot!

Most recently, Johan launched The Nordic Connection, an entrepreneurial network based out of London's TechCity, with a focus on creating global opportunities and connections for Nordic startups.

A regular facilitator, speaker and lecturer at universities and events. These include SXSW, OECD, StartUp Weekend, WOW, Design Week, Service Design, Pecha Kucha, UCL and UiO. A BAFTA Children's Award Jury Member, and winner of awards such as Webby People Choice Award.

Social Capital and Employee Loyalty: The Nordic Advantage

Johan Brand, founding director of Kahoot, has included the benefits of having Nordic developers as part of his pitch to investors. For foreigners, the Nordics conjure up an image of stability that’s great when you want them to trust you with their money. The trust in the workplace is unique here he says, the problem is that it often can be difficult to convince Norwegians of the eventual benefit of joining startups. Once you have them onboard though he wouldn’t be anywhere else,

“What’s great here is that there’s less chance of having core talent poached away, there’s both fewer competitors and much more loyalty to your workplace, and the Nordics work better than anyone else in flat structures”.
