John Feinblatt's early career, after graduating from law school at the Catholic University of America, was centered on court reform. In the early 1990s, he founded the Midtown Community Court. The court's website describes its work as focusing "on minor, non-violent offending, emphasizing alternatives to jail wherever possible. Feinblatt was the founding director of the court, "which was created as part of the economic revitalization effort in Times Square."

Feinblatt then went on to found the Center for Court Innovation, a group that grew out of the success of the Midtown Community Court. The center's website notes, "The project’s [Midtown Community Court] success in reducing both crime and incarceration led the court’s planners, with the support of New York State’s chief judge, to establish the Center for Court Innovation to serve as an ongoing engine for justice reform in New York.
