John Fetterman

U.S. Senator

John Fetterman is a politician serving as the junior United States senator from Pennsylvania. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, and as the 34th lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania. A Pennsylvania native, he has dedicated his life to fighting for Pennsylvania’s forgotten communities that have been left behind.

In 2005, while teaching GED classes, Sen. Fetterman was encouraged by his students to run for mayor of Braddock. In his 13 years as mayor, he worked to rebuild his community by creating jobs, stopping gun violence, getting youth engaged, and bringing creative urban policy solutions to Braddock. In 2018, Fetterman was elected as the state’s Lt. Governor and transformed the position into a bully pulpit, advocating for marijuana legalization, economic justice, equal protection for the LGBTQ+ community, and criminal justice reform. He was elected to the United States Senate in November 2022.

Days before his primary victory, Sen. Fetterman suffered a stroke. Despite this health scare, he continued his campaign and was elected to the office. Following his recovery, Fetterman experienced severe depression, which led to a six-week hospitalization in early 2023. His openness about his struggles has since made him a prominent advocate for mental health awareness, emphasizing the importance of seeking help and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

As a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, Sen. Fetterman is a champion for protecting and expanding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP and is a fierce advocate for universal free school lunch. He sits on the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, is a member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works and also serves on the Joint Economic Committee and the Special Committee on Aging.
