John Kelly, PhD
Professor of Psychiatry in Addiction Medicine at Harvard Medical School
Dr. John F. Kelly is the current Past President of the Society of Addiction Psychology of the American Psychological Association, the Elizabeth R. Spallin Associate Professor of Psychiatry in Addiction Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Program Director of the Addiction Recovery Management Service and Director of the Recovery Research Institute at the Masschusetts General Hospital, and a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of alcohol and other drug addiction and related problems. He is also a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. He treats individual, couples and families suffering from these difficulties. He maintains a private practice in Boston, MA.
With over 20 years experience as an addiction therapist he is currently the Director of the Addiction Recovery Management Service at Massachusetts General Hospital, and also serves as the Elizabeth R. Spallin Associate Professor of Psychiatry in Addiction Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is President of the Society of Addiction Psychology of the American Psychological Association (APA), and has achieved Fellow status in the APA. He has served as a consultant to the White House Office of National Drug Policy, the US Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, the US Department of Education, and to the British Parliament. He has published more than 100 scientific books, articles, and chapters in the addiction field and speaks regularly nationally and internationally. He specializes in motivational enhancement and cognitive-behavioral therapies for addiction.
Dr. Kelly utilizes clinical assessment and measurement to accurately assess the nature, scope, severity and degree of impairment related to alcohol and other drug problems. His therapeutic approach is to provide evidence-based treatment and support and practical feedback to help clients effectively address recovery and personal life challenges. He integrates complementary methodologies and techniques to offer a highly personalized approach tailored to each client. With compassion and understanding, he works with each individual to help them build on their strengths and attain the personal growth they are committed to accomplishing in their change process.
