John Lipsky is a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. He is retired from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after five years of serving as First Deputy Managing Director.

Prior to his appointment at the IMF, Lipsky was the chief economist of the JPMorgan Investment Bank and the Global Head of the Bank’s Economic and Policy Research Department. As managing director of the bank, Lipsky also served on the bank’s management committee. Prior to the December 2000 merger of the Chase Manhattan Bank and JPMorgan, Lipsky served as Chase’s chief economist and director of research since January 1997. He served as chief economist of Salomon Brothers, Inc. from 1992 until 1997. From 1989 to 1992, Lipsky was based in London, where he directed Salomon Brothers European Research Group. He joined Salomon Brothers in 1984, following a decade at the International Monetary Fund.

Lipsky’s professional activities include serving on the board of directors of the National Bureau of Economic Research, the American Council on Germany, and the Japan Society. He also served as a member of the economics subcommittee of the Bond Market Association and of the advisory board of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.

Lipsky received a BA in economics from Wesleyan University. Subsequently, he earned an MA and a PhD in economics from Stanford University.
