Oscar Winning Writer, ’12 Years a Slave,’ ‘American Crime’

John Ridley is known across a variety of media, having achieved success in the worlds of television, film and literature. He is behind one of the hottest new shows of 2015, American Crime, which follows the lives of the participants in a trial with significant racial motives are forever changed during the legal process. He earned two Emmy nominations as the executive producer and writer of the series. His most recent film 12 Years a Slave, which he wrote and executive produced, won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture. Both All Is By My Side, written and directed by Ridley, and 12 Years a Slave premiered at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival.

His body of work includes the feature films U-Turn, Three Kings, and Red Tails. He has published the hard-hitting novels Those Who Walk In Darkness and A Conversation With the Mann, his graphic novel The American Way, and his socio-political essay “The Manifesto of Ascendancy for the Modern American Nigger,” which was published in Esquire magazine. Throughout, Ridley has built a reputation for social relevance and a willingness to forgo political correctness in pursuit of honest storytelling.
