John Thompson    

Chairman of Microsoft; Former Chairman & CEO of Symantec

John W. Thompson is the chairman of Microsoft. He joined the Microsoft board in February 2012, and became independent chairman of Microsoft Corp. in February 2014.

Thompson brings over 40 years of experience in the technology industry. Most recently, he served as chief executive officer of Virtual Instruments, a privately held company that helps solve critical IT performance and availability issues.

Prior to this, he was chairman of the board of directors at Symantec Corporation, where he served as CEO from 1999-2009. During that period, Thompson led the transformation of the company from a consumer software publisher to the global leader in information security solutions for individuals and enterprises.

In September 2002, President George W. Bush appointed Thompson to the National Infrastructure Advisory Committee (NIAC), to make recommendations regarding the security of the critical infrastructure of the United States. In addition, Thompson has served as the chair of the Silicon Valley Blue Ribbon Task Force on Aviation Security and Technology to identify and evaluate technology-driven solutions to improve the security and efficiency of national and local aviation.

Prior to joining Symantec, Thompson had a distinguished career with the IBM Corporation where he held senior executive positions in sales, marketing and software development. In his last assignment, he was general manager of IBM Americas and a member of the company's Worldwide Management Council.

Thompson is a member of the board of directors of UPS, NiSource, Inc., and Seagate. In addition to his services in the technology industry, he is also a member of the board of trustees for the Wetland America Trust. He has served on the national board of Teach for America and on several government commissions that include the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, the National Infrastructure Advisory Committee, and the Silicon Valley Blue Ribbon Task Force on Aviation Security and Technology.

Thompson received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Florida A&M University, and a master’s degree in management science from MIT’s Sloan School of Management. In 2008, he received an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Notre Dame, Mendoza College of Business, and in 2014 he received an honorary doctorate degree from Florida A&M University.
