John Hawie is Senior Vice President and Chief Investment & Risk Officer at Louisiana Workers’ Compensation Corporation (LWCC), where he has been since 2009. Hawie has extensive experience in property-and-casualty company asset management in the United States and Europe. From 2003 to 2009, he was Chief Investment Officer at Commerce Group, where he was responsible for $2.5 billion in fixed income and equity investments. Prior to that, Hawie spent 12 years at General Reinsurance in a number of capacities, including Portfolio Manager for General Re-New England Asset Management, Managing Director for General Re-CKAG Reinsurance and Investment S.à r.l. in Luxembourg, and Vice President in General Reinsurance Corporation’s Investment Department in Stamford, Connecticut. He also was a credit analyst in the Investment and Banking Division of the North Carolina Department of State Treasurer from 1990 to 1991. Hawie earned his B.A. degree from Emory University and received his MBA degree, with a concentration in finance, from Vanderbilt University. Four years later, he attained his Chartered Financial Analyst’s degree. Hawie is currently a member of the Finance Committee for the Board of Directors of the Tiger Athletic Foundation (the fund-raising arm for Louisiana State University athletics). He served on the board from 1997 to 2004. LWCC (www.lwcc.com) is a private, nonprofit mutual insurance company. It is the largest writer of workers’ compensation insurance in Louisiana, covering about 17,000 policyholders. The company carries an “A” (Excellent) rating from A.M. Best.
