UFC light heavyweight Jon “Bones” Jones is one of the most athletic and charismatic warriors competing in mixed martial arts (MMA) today. At 26 years old and known for possessing one of the most electric offensive repertoires in all of MMA, Jones’ athletic prowess combined with his magnetic appeal has catapulted the young prodigy toward true superstardom.
A native of Rochester, New York, Jones was raised in Endicott, New York. While a senior in high school, Jones was the 2005 New York State wrestling champion, and after graduating, he entered Iowa Central Community College. There, Jones continued his dominance on the wrestling mat, becoming the National Junior College wrestling champion, and also a Greco-Roman All American. He also earned his Associate’s degree.
In 2007, Jones started training in MMA. A natural at it, he made his pro debut in 2008. With six straight wins to begin his career, all coming via stoppage, the UFC took notice and came calling. Jones then signed a four-fight deal with the promotion, becoming the youngest fighter on the roster at the time.
Jones continued his streak of dominance with a punishing performance against Matt Hamill. However, controversy ensued as a result of the finish and Jones was disqualified, thereby being handed his first “loss.”
Despite the defeat, Jones showed a true champion’s heart by taking on a huge name in his first UFC main event, when he faced Brandon Vera. In what could be deemed a signature performance, “Bones” utilized his ferocious elbows en route to earning Jones “Knockout of the Night.” Jones then faced grizzled veteran Vladimir Matyushenko, stopping in the first round. This earned “Bones” a bout with un-defeated prospect Ryan Bader at UFC 126. Many expected a war, but Jones took command, stuffing his takedowns and earned a 2nd round submission victory.
Jon displayed what is widely considered the best performance in UFC history in march 2011 dominating legendary martial artist Mauricio “Shogun” Rua with a tko victory. Becoming the youngest champion in UFC history.
Athleticism runs in the Jones family, as his brother is a defensive tackle for the Baltimore Ravens of the NFL, and his other brother is a defensive lineman for the New England Patriots. Jon currently resides in New York and is the very proud father of four young daughters.
