2010 Gold Medal Olympian - Skeleton

Jon Montgomery captured the hearts of Canadians and the attention of everyone during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games. After years of hard work, training and perseverance, Montgomery won a won a gold medal in the skeleton, securing his place in history as one of the best.

In 2002, a casual trip to Canada Olympic Park left an indelible mark on Montgomery. While on a tour of the Park with his family, Montgomery witnessed a skeleton race, and immediately fell in love with the sport.  Shortly after discovering the sport, he began competing competitively, enjoying a quick success with his development and advancement in the sport.

In 2005-06, Montgomery became the first Canadian man to win the Europa Cup Overall men’s title, and is now considered one of Canada’s top skeleton athletes.

Montgomery’s start to his rookie season on the World Cup could not have been drawn more perfectly, and he kicked off his World Cup campaign with a bronze-medal finish on his home track in Calgary. Montgomery went on to finish in the top-10 three more times during the season, finishing sixth overall in the World Cup standings.

Montgomery’s sophomore season on the World Cup was equally remarkable where he enjoyed a breakout season by achieving five podium finishes, including his first World Cup victory and a silver medal at the World Championships. He placed second overall on the World Cup.

 

On February 19, 2010, Montgomery won his first Olympic Gold medal at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics at the Whistler Sliding Centre. His celebratory walk through the streets of Whistler will be remembered by many for years to come. Fans were delighted that Montgomery’s personality shone through following his victory; his determination, unwavering love for Canada and sense of humour have made him a favourite.

His popularity transcends into his Discovery Network reality travel show airing November 2010, Best. Trip. Ever., where Montgomery and his adrenaline-seeking peers drive across British Columbia searching for adventure and extreme sport 'fix'.

When not training or competing, Montgomery works as a sales consultant and automobile auctioneer in Calgary.
