Jon Oringer

Founder, Chairman, and CEO, Shutterstock

Jon Oringer founded Shutterstock in 2003 with thousands of his own digital photographs. A serial entrepreneur, he recognized the need for licensable images at an affordable cost and created the first global subscription image marketplace. Jon built the original site from the ground up, and still enjoys writing code. He holds an MS in computer science from Columbia and a BS in computer science and mathematics from Stony Brook. A New Yorker to the core, Jon resides in the West Village, is a certified commercial helicopter pilot and enjoys shooting film with his Mamiya 711 camera.

His company has enjoyed robust growth since its inception; it grew from 30,000 royalty-free stock images in 2003 to over 11 million in February 2010, and over 18 million in April, 2012. In 2009, Oringer was selected 41st on the Silicon Alley 100, an annual list of the 100 most influential entrepreneurs, investors, executives and technologists in Manhattan. In 2012, Business Insider named Oringer the fifth coolest person in all of New York technology.

In June, 2012, Oringer was recognized as New York's Technology Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young.
