Son of Taiwanese immigrants, Jon Yao opened Kato in 2016 as a tasting menu restaurant focusing on Asian American nostalgia and Taiwanese cuisine. It's got just 27-seats and is located in a Los Angeles strip mall. “I wish to give Asian Americans a stronger voice through food. Food was a strong factor through which I found comfort growing up in a diverse community. In such a divisive time in our history, I want to share the solace I found through food, with the country,” Yao says. He was named a James Beard Foundation Rising Star Chef semifinalist in 2018.
