Figurative Painter

Jordan Casteel is a figurative painter who usually paints intimate portraits of friends, lovers, and family members in addition to neighbors and strangers in Harlem and New York. Her work has been compared to Jacob Lawrence and Henri Matisse. She is a graduate of Yale University. After graduating, her first solo exhibition in New York, Visible Man, opened in August 2014.

Casteel was selected as a 2015-2016 artist-in-residence at The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, and her second solo exhibition, Brothers, opened in October 2015. In September 2017, her third solo exhibition, Nights in Harlem, opened at Casey Kaplan. She is also a tenure-track painting professor at Rutgers. In 2019, she was named as a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree in Art & Style.
