Joseph P. Kennedy II
Former Congressman, Founder of Citizens Energy Corporation, Energy Sector Innovator
As the oldest son of Robert F. Kennedy and a former Democratic Congressman from Massachusetts, Joseph P. Kennedy II is a member of a notable political family. His commitment to addressing socio-economic issues extends into his role as the founder, chairman, and president of Citizens Energy Corporation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing affordable and renewable energy to those with limited financial resources.
During his 12 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, Kennedy focused on initiatives that sought to leverage the private sector for community economic growth and prosperity. His legislative achievements included expanding the availability of credit to working Americans, creating affordable housing units through tax credits, and overhauling federal public housing laws. He also contributed to preserving and expanding federal research and development accounts, leading to new technologies, jobs, and economic growth. Kennedy served on key committees such as the House Banking Committee and the House Veterans Affairs Committee, where he was involved in the federal savings and loan bailout and passed legislation to strengthen the veterans' healthcare system.
Kennedy's leadership at Citizens Energy Corporation has been transformative, evolving the organization beyond its initial program of providing low-cost heating oil. Under his guidance, Citizens Energy has become one of the nation’s first energy firms to move large volumes of natural gas to over 30 states. The organization has also expanded its oil heat program to serve residents in 23 states and the District of Columbia. Kennedy continues to influence the energy sector by advising and serving on the boards of several companies in the energy, telecommunications, and healthcare industries. Through these efforts, he maintains a pragmatic and entrepreneurial approach to solving complex socio-economic challenges.
