Josh Hartnett launched his career with ABC's "Cracker" before achieving fame through roles in a number of films, including "Halloween H20: 20 Years Later," "The Virgin Suicides," "The Faculty," "Black Hawk Down," and "Pearl Harbor." Hartnett's ability to successfully interpret a wide range of characters in various genres led to his recognition as a teen idol. Despite this, he consciously diverted from this image, turning down high-profile roles such as Clark Kent/Superman and Batman in "Batman Begins." This decision reflected his aspirations to develop a more diverse portfolio, as evident from his roles in "The Black Dahlia" and "30 Days of Night."
In addition to his film work, Hartnett has been recognized for his performances on television and in theater. He received three nominations for the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards for his role in the Showtime series "Penny Dreadful." He portrayed Charlie Babbit in the theater adaptation of "Rain Man," for which he won the Dewynters London Newcomer of the Year award. Hartnett's commitment to his craft was further demonstrated when he took a sabbatical from acting to reflect upon his career. During this period, he stated that the pursuit of continuous success was a shortcut to unhappiness, reflecting his philosophies on life and work. Following his break, Hartnett was featured in Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" and stars in M. Night Shyamalan's "Trap." He also appeared as 'Frank' in an episode of the Emmy Award-Winning series "The Bear."
Off-screen, Hartnett has been involved in various causes and campaigns. He supported Global Cool's green lifestyle campaign and participated in the FWD campaign for East Africa drought awareness. He also endorsed Barack Obama during his 2012 campaign. Hartnett's contributions to environmental activism earned him awards and recognition, including being named GQ Men of the Year by GQ magazine in Germany. Hartnett is married to actress Tamsin Egerton, and the couple has four children.
