Joshua Prince-Ramus

Architect & Principal of REX Design Firm

Joshua Prince-Ramus is the founding principal of the internationally-acclaimed architecture and design firm REX, where he leads the design of all projects. REX -- whose name signifies a re-appraisal (RE) of architecture (X) -- consistently challenges and advances building typologies, and promotes the agency of architecture.

Prince-Ramus' and REX’s projects include: the Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center; The Lindemann Performing Arts Center at Brown University; The Necklace Residence on Long Island; China's Shenzhen Opera House; CDMX Mash Up skyscraper in Mexico City; 2050 M Street in Washington, DC; Elizabeth Quay in Perth, Australia; and the Mercedes-Benz Future Lab in Stuttgart, Germany, among others. Seminal projects include the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre in Dallas and the Vakko Fashion Center and Power Media Center in Istanbul, the Seattle Central Library and the Guggenheim-Hermitage Museum in Las Vegas. Prince-Ramus led the latter two while he was partner of OMA New York, the firm he rebranded as REX in 2006.

Prince-Ramus was the first recipient of the Marcus Prize, the biennial international architecture award conferred by the Marcus Corporation Foundation and the University of Wisconsin, and has been honored by the experimental performance company STREB with their Action Maverick Award. He has been credited as one of the “5 greatest architects under 50” by HuffPost; one of the world’s most influential young architects by Wallpaper; one of the twenty most influential players in design by Fast Company; and among “The 20 Essential Young Architects” by ICON magazine. He was also featured as one of the “Best and Brightest” by Esquire magazine.

An early member of the TED Advisory Board, Prince-Ramus has shared REX’s design methodologies at the TED2006 and TEDxSMU conferences, and lectures frequently at universities, cultural institutions, and symposiums around the world. He has been the Eero Saarinen Visiting Professor at Yale University, Cullinan Visiting Professor at Rice University, and a visiting professor at Columbia University, The Cooper Union, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Syracuse University, among others.

Prince-Ramus holds a Master of Architecture from Harvard University, where he earned the inaugural Araldo Cossutta Fellowship and the SOM Fellowship, and a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy with distinction in the major, magna cum laude, from Yale University. He is NCARB Certified and a registered architect in states throughout the U.S. and Australia, as well as in The Netherlands.
