Judy Richardson

Film Producer and Former Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) Activist

Judy Richardson began her film work with the Academy Award-nominated, 14-hour PBS series, "Eyes on the Prize." She was associate producer and education director for the series. As a senior producer with Northern Light Productions, she produced African American historical documentaries for TV and museums. Recent productions include "Scarred Justice: The Orangeburg Massacre 1968" for PBS, the two-hour History Channel film, "Slave Catchers, Slave Resisters," and all the videos for National Park Service's "Little Rock Nine" Visitor Center. She is currently co-producing the site’s orientation video.

Professor Richardson was a staff worker with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) for three years in the early 1960s in Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama; was a founder in 1968 of the country's largest African American bookstore; and director of Information for the United Church of Christ Commission for Racial Justice. Since 1990, she has lectured and conducted teacher workshops on the modern Civil Rights Movement and its relevance to issues today.

She and five other female SNCC activists edited "Hands on the Freedom Plow: Personal Accounts by Women" in SNCC, published by University of Illinois Press in 2010. The book includes the memoirs of 52 courageous women on the front lines of the 1960’s Southern Civil Rights Movement.
