Chief Experience Officer, ECU Health; Leader & Educator of Healthcare Workers

Julie Kennedy Oehlert is chief experience officer for ECU Health, driving the experience and culture there, including patient and team member experience and workplace well-being. Oehlert also serves as chief of marketing and communications, a role that includes both internal and external communications, digital, social, and public relations. She has operational responsibility for environmental services, food services, language access services, experience team, and patient and family advisors across the ECU Health system. Her clinical practice is emergency trauma nursing and in her career she has served in a variety of clinical, operational, consultative, and strategic roles across the health care continuum, remaining a perpetual student of design thinking and culture disruption. Oehlert is adjunct faculty for East Carolina University College of Nursing.

Oehlert was a healthcare leadership coach with expertise and innovation to help executives drive results in a variety of healthcare settings. Specialties included academic medical centers, physician coaching and medical practice coaching.

She is an experienced international speaker, and presenter with a unique style that blends evidence with grit, humor and candor. Expert in speaking on the nuts and bolts of healthcare culture transformation, as it relates to patient safety, quality and patient and employee experience.

Julie Kennedy Oehlert started at North Carolina’s Vidant Health in the fall of 2016 with a tall order: Improve the experiences of patients and employees, and lead the sizable health care system’s equity and diversity inclusion efforts.

“For me, I was so humbled and excited to be recognized with other Pirate Nurses,” Dr. Oehlert said. “I came from outside of Vidant but my heart is with Vidant and ECU. I feel welcomed into this community. I was so overwhelmed when I was nominated and accepted.” Dr. Oehlert said she is proud to be part of a health system with so many Registered Nurses as leaders in different areas. With nurses in non-traditional roles lending their health care expertise and compassion for patients and families, the nursing heart can be seen in many facets of the health system.
